Malaysia is once again blessed with two Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) students who have succeeded in climbing the 8,848m (29,035 ft) Mount Everest. They are Muhammad Muqharabbin and Ahmad Reduan.

Muhammad Muqharabbin, or Kobin, is a final year student doing a Diploma in Sports Science and Recreation at UITM while Ahmad Reduan, 22, has just graduated with a Diploma in Applied Science from the same university.

They reached the peak of Mount Everest in the Himalayan Range, Nepal, at 10.50am (8.35am Nepal time), on May 16 this year. Their final 300m journey from the South Summit to the peak took 45 minutes and they spent 40 minutes on the peak.

Relating their experience, Kobin said he nearly gave up in the early stages of their climb because he had a very bad cough. However, on the way to Camp Base 2, at an altitude of 6,500 m, he recovered and was able to proceed.

He added that the most challenging part was the hike from Camp Base 2 to 3 because they had to climb a steep gradient of 80 degrees. They lost appetite and had difficulty breathing and had to depend on an oxygen mask.

Ahmad Reduan, found that the experience of climbing the South Ridge was great fun because of the fantastic view of the Himalayan Range all along the trek and he would treasure the experience he gained for the rest of his life.

The two young students could achieve the extraordinary feat because they had the determination, resoluteness, strict discipline and strong mine to reach the peak of Mount Everest. Their feat to conquer Mount Everest was extraordinary as the expedition was carried out in a foreign environment, which was very different from conditions in Malaysia.

Their effort is much valued and they are described as the country's student heroes and top role models.
